Description
After two cyclones in three days and exhausting ongoing recovery efforts, we need to band together and express our love, solidarity and pride in the beautiful nation and peoples of Vanuatu.
To celebrate the heroism and foster connection and change, the program will see:
1. Bands of Vanuatu, mirroring the show of solidarity of the Kivhan Concert.
2. Fundraising via local and international resident/visitor donations of food for sale, prepared with love.
3. An opportunity for community engagement, to partake of food at local prices, hear uplifting music with the aim of raising awareness and fostering action.
The day coincides with the United Nations General Assembly vote for a resolution moved by the Government of Vanuatu for an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on obligations of States regarding climate change. Vanuatu is in the forefront of the movement. In May 2022, the Government of Vanuatu’s Climate Emergency Declaration and support for Tuvalu’s initiative has led to the call for all nations to sign a Fossil Fuel non-proliferation treaty of six Pacific Island nations in March 2023.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy (category 5) in February/ March 2023 that lingered for 39 days, established another record: Climate change is not only real, it is man made. Raising our voice, is an initiative not only to support those affected by cyclones Judy and Kevin and preserve the natural beauty of a nation, but to safeguard the future of generations.
Our hope is to influence the world and send a hopeful message to as many news outlets as possible. We will play music until every nation discusses the Vanuatu Resolution in UNGA in New York (3 am Vanuatu time ). The event will be live streamed after 10pm by VBTC. The concert and event is supported by the Government as well as all major environment organisation. This is KIvhan for climate justice. Music, food, speeches, films in a positive and friendly environment, not to be missed.
The event will be a special moment in the history of Vanuatu, designed to be tipping point for a global united approach and the message couldn’t be clearer: There is no Planet B.
Many great artists of Vanuatu, as always, will be playing.
International pop star Bjorn Vido will play with his local band “Music in Space”. Many other bands are yet to be announced.
Solomon Yeo, the representative of the Pacific Students for Climate Justice who proposed the Resolution will be in New York and engage with the Concert Organisers till the debate begins. Other climate activist’s inputs are yet to be announced.
